Citizen Policing has been around since 1829 when Sir Robert Peel instituted the Metropolitan Police Force in London, England. Peel's idea- "To maintain at all times a relationship with the public that gives
reality to the historic tradition that the police are the public and the public
are the police: the police being the only members of the public that are paid to
give full time attention to the duties which are incumbent on every citizen in
the interest of community welfare and existence." The Gainesville Police Department has formed a large number of partnerships with the community in which we serve: Citizen Crime Watch Meetings, the Black on Black Crime Task Force, SW Business Association, Citizen Police Academy, just to name a few.
