The Gainesville Police Department has started an initiative with several other agencies in our community to create a multi-jurisdictional Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) unit. This unit has been named the Design Out Crime Unit. We have enlisted the help of the Alachua County Sheriff's Office, University Police Department, City of Gainesville Codes Enforcement, City of Gainesville Public Works Department, City of Gainesville Cultural Affairs Department, and volunteers from within the Community. The primary function of a Design Out Crime Unit is to look at current and proposed properties design within the City of Gainesville and Alachua County to enhance safety through architectural design, lighting and landscaping to promote a safe environment for the individuals using the property. The Unit is currently focusing on large parcel properties such as businesses and apartment complexes.
As a Police Department, we are committed to looking at crime from not only a reactionary effort, but in a preventative effort before a crime occurs to another victim. We are committed to looking at several solutions in order to help reduce crime within our community. The Design Out Crime Unit's goal is to make each property that we survey as safe as possible and to prevent another crime from occurring to a victim.
***If you are a home owner and you would like to benefit from the CPTED principals for your residence, you can contact your Crime Prevention Officer at 352-393-7500.
