Commanded by Lieutenant Gary Hoffman, a member of the Gainesville Police Department since 1979, the Division is comprised of two squads of Detectives totaling two sergeants, seventeen corporals/officers and a Forensic Crime Unit comprised of a sergeant, three investigators, a crime scene technician, photo lab technician and two latent print examiners. Detectives provide coverage for both day and night shifts Monday through Saturday. The two squads are assigned to investigate major crimes against persons along with major felony property crimes. The major crimes against persons, include, but are not limited to, homicide, robbery, sexual battery, lewd and lascivious acts, aggravated assault and battery, child abuse, crimes against the elderly, internet crimes against children, domestic violence and missing persons. Felony property crimes include grand theft, fraud, forgery, embezzlement, arson, vehicle thefts, computer crimes and credit card crimes. The Division is also responsible for investigating fires or destructive devices within the City of Gainesville. Investigators are responsible for making on-the-scene assessments as to the origin and cause of the fire and to provide investigative assistance to the Gainesville Fire Rescue Department. In addition, the division works in conjunction with the pawnshops, secondhand dealers, and other agencies in the recovery of victim's property. Detectives conduct random inspections of pawnshops and secondhand dealers to ensure that the establishments are complying with applicable state and municipal laws governing their operations.
