EVOLUTION OF CRIME
ANALYSIS
With the introduction of computerized software, the field of crime analysis
has experienced a surge in growth and popularity. Computerized crime mapping
offers a quick visual view of crime data that previously took weeks and sometimes
months to accomplish. Investigative software analyzes larger amounts of data
displaying time-line information and association charts. Financial records that
used to take weeks to analyze can now be done in a matter of hours.
 | CRIME MAPPING -
Traditional crime mapping consisted of placing pins on
a map to mark a specific crime location. Inability with this system included pins
falling off the maps, the inability to retain historical data, and the inability
to manipulate maps or query the data. Each week, or month, the pins
were removed and the process started all over.
Computerized crime mapping is a
new area for most law enforcement agencies. In fact, only a small number of law
enforcement agencies have computerized mapping capabilities. This is due to the
cost of the software and the training of personnel. As this area grows, it is
anticipated that law enforcement agencies will invest in sophisticated mapping
software and employ mapping specialists. |
