School Crossing Guards have the responsibility of safeguarding children at assigned street crossings prior to and at the conclusion of the school day.  It is not the primary responsibility of School Crossing Guards to direct traffic. The primary responsibility of School Crossing Guards is to use safe gaps in traffic, or when necessary, to create safe gaps to help the children cross the streets safely.  School Crossing Guards do not direct or expedite the flow of traffic at an intersection; however, if a School Crossing Guard is used as a Traffic Control Officer, he/she must receive certification under the provisions of Florida State Statute (FSS) 316.640.

School Crossing Guards receive training specific to their duties.  The training standards and guidelines are set forth by the Florida Department of Transportation. After an initial eight-hour block of training, the School Crossing Guard is assigned to a post.  At the post, a certified instructor observes the School Crossing Guard for a period of time for job performance and safety.  After completing this phase of training, the School Crossing Guard becomes certified as required by FSS 316.75.  School Crossing Guards must be re-certified every year by successfully passing a minimum of a two-hour on-site observation by a certified instructor.

 School Crossing Appreciation Day

On the first Friday in February every year, the Gainesville Police Department holds an appreciation breakfast for School Crossing Guards.  The Governor proclaims this School Crossing Guard Appreciation Day.  This is the day for cities to recognize their school crossing guards and the importance of their position in protecting children as they safely cross busy intersections on their way to school.  A City of Gainesville Proclamation signed by Mayor Hanrahan was presented this year to the Guards, as well as a Certificate of Recognition signed by Governor Jeb Bush, recognizing GPD’s School Crossing Guard Program as the “2005 Program of the Year”.  Only one agency is selected for this distinguished award and GPD is proud of this accomplishment.

To apply for  a School Crossing Guard position, you can contact the City of Gainesville Human Resource Department and complete an application. The phone number for the Human Resources Office is (352) 334-5077, or you can reach them via the web by clicking here- Human Resources.

The Supervisor for the School Crossing Guards is PST III Supervisor E. Fletcher.  You can contact her via phone 352-334-2482 or email at fletchereg@ci.gainesville.fl.us.
