Tow Complaint Form

There is a resource at the Gainesville Police Department for complaints about trespass (roam/call-in) towing issues in the City.  Trespass (roam/call-in) towing occurs in the parking lots of many apartment complexes and businesses in the City where a contract to tow parking violators exists between private owners and tow companies.

Parking lots that restrict parking with roam/call-in towing are posted by the designated tow company, as required by City of Gainesville Ordinance, with signs at all entrances.  Along with other information, the signs warn the public that unauthorized vehicles will be towed.  Please review Towing Bill of Rights for additional information.

Complaints regarding alleged improper tows by the contracted companies can be submitted to the Gainesville Police Department, Operational Development & Strategy Division as follows:

·    Complete the Towing Complaint form, located either at the Gainesville Police Department front desk or on the GPD website (click here for form).  Mail or deliver the form to:

     Gainesville Police Department
Attn: Lt. Pete Backhaus, Administrative & Technical Services Bureau
P.O. Box 1250
Gainesville, Fl 32602

·     In lieu of the form, write a letter detailing the roam towing complaint.  Mail or return to the same location as above.

·     E-mail the towing complaint to:  backhauspf@cityofgainesville.org

·     If you have additional questions, you may call Lieutenant Pete Backhaus at (352) 393-7550.

You will be contacted as soon as possible after receipt of the complaint.  It is important to note that, in general, vehicles should be claimed from the tow company within a 24 hour period of the tow to avoid additional charges.  Claiming the vehicle in no way effects the outcome of a complaint.
